Protest at Japanese consulate in NY over East China Sea islands

Nearly 1,000 Chinese nationals and overseas Chinese gathered on Thursday in front of the Japanese consulate in New York, protesting against Japan's "provocative" statements of ownership of the Diaoyu or Senkaku islands to assert China's sovereignty over the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, reports our sister newspaper China Times.
The crowds waved the PRC flag and a variety of banners that said "Overthrow Japan's militarism" and "The Diaoyus belong to China" in protest against the announcement by Japan's prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda, on July 7 that his government intends to purchase the islands and nationalize them.
