Pentagon Missile Defense Agency Tells Employees to Lay off the Porn

The Pentagon has warned staffers and contractors working for the Missile Defense Agency to stop using government computers and networks to surf the web looking at porn. The announcement came from the Missile Defense Agency's executive director John James Jr.

James wrote in a recent memo that employees and contractors in recent months had been discovered "engaging in inappropriate use of the MDA network."

He wrote in the memo, "Specifically, there have been instances of employees and contractors accessing websites, or transmitting messages, containing pornographic or sexually explicit images." He continued, "These actions are not only unprofessional, they reflect time taken away from designated duties, are in clear violation of federal and DoD and regulations, consume network resources and can compromise the security of the network though the introduction of malware or malicious code."

The East Asia Pivot

A Pentagon-sponsored report to Congress outlines the U.S. military’s new pivot to Asia and calls for adding attack submarines and Marines based throughout the Pacific to head off a future war with China.
The report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies presents three options based on impending cuts in defense spending. They include keeping the current status quo forces, mainly in Japan and South Korea, or modestly increasing military forces by adding attack submarines, Marine Air-Ground Task Forces, more warships and bombers, another aircraft carrier strike group, and more intelligence aircraft. A third option looks at sharply cutting forces throughout Asia, which the report said risks undermining stability.
The report is “consistent with the major elements of the [Defense] Department’s strategy for the region,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a cover letter accompanying the report.

Empty Offices Mean No Acquisition Overhaul for USAF

The Pentagon wants to fill a number of top U.S. Air Force leadership positions, particularly in the area of acquisition. But with a presidential election in November looming, finding people to serve in those roles might be a pipe dream.
E-Ring offices throughout the Air Force corridors of the Pentagon are vacant. There is no undersecretary, no acquisition chief and no deputy weapons buyer.
Air Force Secretary Michael Donley — a holdover from President George W. Bush’s administration —- is overseeing the service’s $40 billion purchasing portfolio, in addition to his regular responsibilities. Lt. Gen. Charles “CR” Davis, the Air Force’s top uniformed acquisition official, is also helping with many of the weapons-buying responsibilities.

Pentagon takes new steps to clamp down on leaks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon announced on Thursday that it is taking new steps to try to clamp down on leaks of classified information, saying unauthorized disclosures undermine national security and in some cases rise to the level of criminal acts.
Pentagon press secretary George Little said in a statement that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has ordered him to join the Pentagon's top intelligence official in monitoring all "major, national level" news media reports for unauthorized disclosures of secrets.
Panetta also reiterated guidance issued by his predecessor, Robert Gates, that the Pentagon's public affairs office should be the only source of defense information provided to the news media in Washington.
Little announced these steps after Panetta testified in closed session before the House Armed Services Committee on the matter of recent leaks of classified intelligence information. Joining Panetta at the hearing was the Joint Chiefs chairman, Gen. Martin Dempsey, and the Pentagon's top lawyer, Jeh Johnson.
