To counter the Chinese anti-access and area-denial strategies in the Asia-Pacific region, the United States plans to design a new strategic bomber to replace its current B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit bombers, reports our sister Chinese-language newspaper Want Daily.
The long-range bombers may cost up to US$550 million each. Though unmanned drones have been deployed by the US in Afghanistan and Iraq, Lt General Charles Davis, an official in charge of air force procurement, said bombers flown by pilots are still needed when facing a new combat environment. The relative advantages and capabilities of the B-1 and B-2 bombers will be incorporated into the development of the new aircraft.
The B-1 is faster than the B-2, but lacks the stealth capability of the latter. With new experience in developing stealth fighters such as the F-22 and F-35, the new strike bomber should be as fast as the B-1 but with the stealth capability of the B-2. The new aircraft should enter service by 2025, according to information provided by the US Air Force.
