Turkey closed all legal borders on Wednesday after Syrian rebels “seized control of several crossings on the Syrian side”, The Washington Post reported.
The decision followed growing concerns that Islamist extremists may have taken over at least one of the posts, after an amateur video was posted on a social media site showing alleged jihadi fighters at Bab al-Hawa declaring they had created an “Islamic state.”
According to Turkish officials, the closure would only impact Turks traveling into Syria. While Syrian refugees would still be permitted entry into Turkey, they would not be able to use the official crossings, along with the rebels, weapon smugglers, military defectors and casualties of the war who have poured into south Turkey recently.
Despite Syrians seeking refuge in other neighboring countries such as Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan, they have been welcomed the most by Turkey, whose government called for the ouster of its former ally, President Bashar al-Assad.
