German intelligence report highlights activity of Chinese spies

Germany's Federal Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution on July 18 published its 2012 security report, in which Chinese spies have once again become a focus of attention.
The report says agents from China often take advantage of opportunities to talk with German officials, entrepreneurs, scholars or soldiers to obtain confidential information. In a friendly manner, they attempt to turn the conversation to their topics of interested in, such as Germany's China policy, military technology or innovations of civilian products.
If the conversation proves useful, the spies may look to develop the relationship with gifts, offers of dinner or even invitations to travel to China. In this way, Chinese agents secure intelligence sources in Germany. The report notes that many Chinese intelligence agencies are quite active in Germany, with their major missions including collecting economic and political intelligence, keeping an eye on anti-China organizations and monitoring or threatening advocates for Xinjiang or Tibetan independence.
The report says members of Chinese intelligence units are very patient when dealing with German targets but are blunt toward their compatriots or people of Chinese descent. There are 79,000 Chinese nationals living or working in Germany, constituting a major information source for Chinese intelligence units.
