US Army deploys GA-ASI’s Gray Eagle UAS

The first full 12 aircraft company of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems’ (GA‑ASI) Gray Eagle unmanned aerial system (UAS), called F/227, has been deployed by the US Army following training and evaluation exercises.
GA-ASI Aircraft Systems Group president Frank Pace said: “Gray Eagle will provide F/227 with 24/7 RSTA [Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition], precision attack, and communications relay capabilities.”
“This system fielding does not rely on a legacy Ground Control Station [GCS], showing our total commitment to the One System GCS/ Universal GCS combined with the Tactical Controlled Data Link [TCDL] architecture,” Pace added.
Through Quick Reaction Capability (QRC) initiatives, two groups of four aircraft each were deployed in Afghanistan prior to the establishment of F/227.
During the initial seven-month training and evaluation period, the Gray Eagle aircraft logged over 1,700 flight hours.
US Army PM UAS deputy project manager Richard Kretzschmar said: “The Gray Eagle UAS is providing unprecedented value to the operators.”
The aircraft can conduct long-endurance surveillance, communications relay, and weapons delivery missions.
GA-ASI had successfully delivered 61 Gray Eagle aircraft to the Army to date, while another 44 aircraft are currently on order.
