A Bloomberg Government report released June 17, said the U.S.
Air Force has experienced 129 drone accidents in the past 15 years,
with aircraft produced by Northrup Grumman Corp. and General Atomics
Aeronautical Systems involved in more of the accidents than those of any
other manufacturers.
These accidents fuel the fire of critics of FAA plans to allow drones more access to civilian airspace.
Northrop’s Global Hawk and General Atomic’s Predator experienced an accident rate of 9.31 per 100,000 flying hours, triple the fleet-wide average. Bloomberg used only drone accidents that accounted for at least $500,000 in damage or completely destroyed the drone.
