Asian-American crew of the USS Nimitz tell of life in the US Navy

Stories and experiences of Chinese-American and Taiwanese-American crewmembers aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz were shared with reporters from our sister newspaper China Times during the RIMPAC 2012 naval exercise currently underway in Hawaii.
There are currently eight crewmembers serving aboard the Nimitz who can trace their heritage to either mainland China or Taiwan. The carrier played an important role in maintaining cross-strait peace during the 1996 Strait Crisis.
Lieutenant Chen Chi-hong, an aviation maintenance specialist serving aboard the Nimitz, spoke to the reporters in Taiwanese-accented Mandarin. He moved to New York with his family as a 10-year old. He married his wife this April during a trip back to Taiwan.
Chen has known his Taiwanese wife since elementary school, and until recently they closed the distance between them through writing emails.
