Iranian President Ahmadinejad and his military chiefs
The Iranian Armed Forces showcased its latest indigenous weapons during military parade at Tehran on Friday.The annual September 21 parades mark the start of the Week of Sacred Defense, commemorating Iranians' sacrifices during the 8 years of Iraqi imposed war on Iran in 1980s.
Iran also displayed advanced missiles, including ballistic missiles of the Shahab-3 and Sejil, which are reported to have a range of 1,300 km-2,000 km.
According to the semi-official Fars news agency, "Raad," or "Thunder," is based on Russian-made S-200 long range missiles, but now also carries "Taer 2" ("Bird" 2) missiles, which are domestically produced by the Revolutionary Guard.
The system is said to be able to intercept threats at a range of up to 50 kilometers, with the capability of hitting targets at 22,000 meters.
On Thursday, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi downplayed the West's attempts to isolate Iran through sanctions and pressure, stressing that it would never be able to inflict any harm to the Iranian nation, semi-official Fars news agency reported.
