The US is offering 245 Stinger missiles to India as part of a weapons
package for the Apache attack choppers being acquired by the Air Force.
"245 air-to-air Stinger missiles and 56 launchers are included in
the weapons package for the Apache helicopters," officials of Raytheon,
which manufactures the missiles, said.
"The Stinger compliments the advanced performance of the Apache
by providing the IAF with the critical air-to-air defence capability,"
they said.
India has selected the American Apache helicopter for its
requirement of 22 attack helicopters which will have both air-to-ground
and air-to-air roles in the service.

Russian Air Force Gets The Good Stuff
October 11, 2012: On September 21st the first Russian Su-30SM
two-seat fighter flew. Thirty of this model were ordered back in April
and deliveries to the Russian Air Force are to begin in six months. The
Su-30SM is a Russian Air Force version of the Su-30MKI that has long
been exported (to India, Algeria and Malaysia). For the last two decades
Russian defense manufacturers have survived on exports. The Russian
military halted most procurement spending after the Soviet Union
collapsed in 1991 (largely from financial mismanagement).

Russia to Salvage Sunken Nuclear Subs - Media
Barents sea
The Russian Defense Ministry is planning to raise and scrap two sunken nuclear submarines in the northern Barents and Kara seas in order to prevent potential radioactive pollution of the area, the Izvestia newspaper said on Thursday.
The ministry will announce an international tender, which may include companies from the France, the Netherlands, South Korea and United States, as the Russian Navy does not have the necessary equipment to carry out deep-sea salvage operations, Izvestia said, citing a military source.

The U.S. and Israeli militaries are engaged in final preparations
for the largest-ever joint missile defense drill in the allies’ history.
The three-week exercise, dubbed Austere Challenge 12 (AC12), will start on Oct. 21, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday, citing an army source.

Syria: 106 soldiers killed by rebels
Beirut - Syrian rebels killed 14 soldiers in an attack on an army post
in Daraa province on Friday, a watchdog said, a day after the army
suffered 92 losses, its highest daily total in the conflict.
Six rebels were also killed in the attack on the army checkpoint at Khirba in the southern province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, adding that fighting also raged in the northern provinces of Idlib and Aleppo.
The Britain-based watchdog said on Thursday had marked one of the deadliest days since an anti-regime revolt erupted in March last year, with at least 240 people killed across Syria, including the 92 soldiers, 67 rebels and 81 civilians.

Japanese React With Fear, Anger Over China Islands Dispute
TOKYO — The dispute between Japan and China
over the ownership of a chain of islands in the East China Sea
continues to escalate, with China boycotting a meeting of the IMF being
held in Tokyo. A growing sense of fear over China's increasing strength
is being reported in the Japanese capital.
In August a fleet of Japanese boats headed for the disputed islands, called the Senkaku by Japan, and the Diaoyu by China. After a journey of several hours, some of the activists - including Japanese lawmakers - swim out to the uninhabited rocks.
