The IDF’s pioneer UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) program gains steam, becoming a regular sight on the Gazan border while preparing for a new generation of vehicles
As the Guardium UGV takes its nightly patrol along Gaza’s border, the scene is quiet. Many miles away, a pair of operators scans the wide array of cameras, taking in 360 degrees of information. Suddenly, a red glow appears on the thermal cameras and slowly takes a human shape. Lights blare and confirm that someone is approaching the fence. A voice booms from the Guardium frightening the suspect. He cries out “is someone in there?” before thinking twice and running.
First Sgt. Chen Vidal, the UGV system’s chief mechanic, comments on the psychological effect of the system. “To the Palestinians, it’s largely an unknown quantity, they have no idea what it’s capable of,” he said. “It’s futuristic looking and the fact that no one’s inside instills a bit of fear- it’s a potent psychological weapon.”
